Bird Baths
Small garden birds which usually eat seeds are very much in need of fresh water for drinking and bathing because it is not present in their diet. In order to attract these small birds to your garden, you can install a bird bath, through which these birds can get fresh drinking water along with water for bathing especially in the winter season when there is not much water available. A properly maintained birdbath is the best solution to attract all kind of birds. In fact it is more useful in attracting birds as compared to the bird feeders. Bird feeders only attract certain specie of birds for which food is provided in the feeder whereas birdbaths attract all kind of birds because water is a necessity which all the birds need.
In the winter season, when temperature falls below zero degree centigrade, water is usually frozen even in the bird baths. So by providing the birds with a heated bird bath or with a bird bath deicer can be a blessing for them. A bird bath de-icer is placed inside the birdbath, where it operates to melt the ice, thus providing birds with fresh and warm water in the winter season. You can also provide birds with a bird bath that has a fountain in it. These kinds of bird baths can also be run by solar energy. Such bird baths are called solar copper bird bath. Copper bird bath have a slippery base which makes it difficult for the birds to come out of it. Make sure that the base is made of rough surface. The best option can be mosaic birdbath, which have various patters on it. You can also make you own bird bath and can make various types of pattern on the base of the bird bath like seahorse bird bath or roses birdbath etc. you can also have deck mouth bird bath or hanging bird baths near you house window to have a clear view of the birds.
If you have installed a polyresin bird bath in your garden certain important factors should be kept in mind. Following are some of tips which should be kept in mind.
• Birdbath should not be very deep. It must be shallow but not more than 2 to 3 inches deep. Deep bird bath can result in the drowning of birds. If it is deep place few pebbles in the water so that the birds can stand on them for support.
• The bird bath should be shallow from the edge.
• Bird baths ought to be cleaned regularly. The simple way to clean it is to wash it daily and place some fresh water in it. If it is mosaic bird bath, it has a tendency to become mossy; therefore it should be cleaned and scrubbed with a proper brush.
• The voice of the falling water attracts more birds. So it is recommended to have a fountain in bird bath which will not only give a beautiful look, it will also keep the water clean and fresh.
• Bird baths should be placed at such a place where it can see the area around it so that if any predator attacks the birds, they can have a fair warning. For this bird baths can be placed in the centre on the garden, from where birds can see all around them. Similarly, bird bath should not be small enough so that the bird can see through it.
• It is advisable to place the bird bath on a higher place, like on a stand rather than on the ground to avoid the predators.
